"Hand to God"

Comedy, Play, Talks/Lectures

Sierra Stages begins its 11th Season with the dark comedy “Hand to God” by Robert Askins, playing through March 16. After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and—most especially—his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. “Hand to God” explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us. Warning: “Hand to God” is not for those who are easily offended by raw language, adult and sexual situations, unconventional religious themes, and violence. Tickets may be purchased with no additional charge online at www.SierraStages.org and over the phone by calling 530.346.3210. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, subject to availability, including $15 Student Rush tickets.

Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra: M. Butterfly

Drama

M. Butterfly, written by Chinese-American playwright David Henry Hwang and directed by Jeffrey Mason and Susan Mason, received the Tony Award for Best Play in 1988. Based loosely on the real-life romance between a French diplomat and a Chinese opera diva in the 1960s-1980s, M. Butterfly is a tale of love, deceit, and espionage. This show is not the opera. Performed in three acts, M. Butterfly is recommended for mature audiences; it contains adult content, language, and nudity. Tickets are available online at www.catsweb.org and at Briar Patch Co-op in Grass Valley. Performances through May 4.
