Reno Philharmonic: Classix Series – Trail Blazers

Classical

Trail Blazers pays tribute to unexplored frontiers. We are honored to feature baritone Thomas Hampson, one of the most recognized, popular, and sought-after singers today, as he joins the orchestra for Michael Daugherty’s Letters from Lincoln. His versatility, imagination, and vocal charisma have set new standards on the operatic stages and concert halls the world over. The program will conclude with a side-by-side performance featuring the Reno Phil Orchestra and Reno Phil Youth Symphony Orchestra playing the New World Symphony, garnering its name because Dvorak wrote it during the 1890s when exploring the U.S.

No group is more closely identified with African song – some might say with world music itself – than this vibrant South African nine-member vocal ensemble. Since 1987, when they were introduced to mainstream America with the release of Paul Simon’s groundbreaking "Graceland" album, these African troubadours have traveled the world with the uplifting, polyrhythmic harmonies of their homeland. The group has won five Grammy Awards, including one this year for Best World Music Album for their recent Shaka Zulu Revisted release.

Jose Gonzalez

Acoustic,Folk,Latin/Salsa,Pop

With his crystal-clear singing voice and vibrant, classically-inspired playing, José González is one of today’s most remarkable artists – testament to the irrefutable power of one man and a guitar. His debut album 'Veneer' captured his magical sound in its purest state, simply beautiful and beautifully simple. He has since toured the US extensively, selling out shows in every major market. While sonically similar to Veneer, José's recent release 'In Our Nature' shows González' growth as a songwriter. Displaying a heightened emphasis on melody and strong, focused lyrics – the album is a dark combination of softness and anger that is at once mesmerizing, intimate and hauntingly epic.
