2018 Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition

Special Event

The Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition, now in its 14th year, supports young artists in the early stages of their careers, providing scholarships to further their musical studies as well as valuable performance opportunities to encourage their artistic growth. This year the competition features the Founders Prize in Vocals to U.S.-residents ages 18–22, and the Young Artists Prize to California-resident pianists and instrumentalists ages 12–17. The weekend-long finals celebration includes three events: The All-Stars Concert April 27, featuring YAC alumni in a mixed-repertoire program; The Competition Finals April 28, where talented young musicians from across the country take the stage with their best repertoire before an esteemed panel of judges, competing for cash prizes and a spot in the Young Artists Competition Winners Concert; and the Winners Concert April 29, as Lara Downes hosts the celebratory concert featuring the winners of the competition.

Pedrito Martinez Group

When the Pedrito Martinez Group takes the stage, a wave of pure energy embraces the audience. A tireless performer, Cuban percussionist and singer Martinez heads a band whose sole mission is to raise the roof and share in the infectious joy of music-making. Martinez has worked with a who’s who of musicians, including Paul Simon, Eddie Palmieri, Sting and Wynton Marsalis, the latter of whom considers Martinez a “genius” and revelation to work with.

Vladimir Feltsman, Pianist

Classical

Pianist and conductor Vladimir Feltsman is one of the most versatile and commanding musicians of our time. In 2017, Feltsman embarked on a three-year project — "Connections, Influences and Inspirations" — featuring an annual performance that explores the ways in which some of the greatest composers for the keyboard drew on the work of those who came before. This first performance of the project will focus on the work of Bach, Haydn and Beethoven.

Sasha Cooke, Mezzo-Soprano, & Jason Vieaux, Guitar

Classical

The pairing of Grammy-winners Sasha Cooke and Jason Vieaux casts extraordinary magic out of just voice and guitar. Each artist has built a distinct career: Vieaux boasts a wide-ranging discography and his own school of classical guitar; Cooke has thrived with her acclaimed interpretations of Mahler as well as an ongoing commitment to new music. This evening builds on their debut at Music@Menlo in a program that veers toward intimacy, with a distinctly Spanish flair.

Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra thrives on cross-cultural collaboration and cutting-edge improvisation. A regular Sunday-night gig at New York’s famed Birdland has helped hone the group’s tight ensemble runs, stirring dynamics and impeccable sense of swing. Multi-Grammy Award–winner, pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill, the son of Cuban trumpeter Chico O’Farrill, has been hailed by The New York Times as “a magnificent player ... sharp, splashy, and driving.”

Toronto-based South Asian dance company inDANCE was established in 1999 as a vehicle to encompass the entire range of artistic director Hari Krishnan's creative output: choreography, performance, touring and teaching. This company crafts a provocative global view of contemporary Indian dance.

San Francisco Symphony Orchestra

Classical

Founded in 1911, the San Francisco Symphony has since received some of the world’s most prestigious recording awards. After a one-year interlude, the symphony returns to the Mondavi Center, this time under the baton of maestro David Robertson. Pianist Kirill Gerstein, the sixth recipient of the Gilmore Artist Award, accompanies the symphony, performing Brahms’ emotionally surging Piano Concerto No. 1, alongside Haydn’s Symphony No. 102 and Brett Dean’s "Engelsflügel."
