Or he may be best known for his two Grammy winning works - the theme to 'Hill Street Blues' and his 1987 release, 'Minute by Minute.' But then again he may be best known as the quintessential session man for the contribution of his unmistakable sound to over 100 gold albums by artists like Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jerry Garcia, Michael Jackson and more than 70 others.

He has been a TEDx talk presenter, and his guitar playing has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film “The Descendants." In 2011, at the apex of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, Makana’s song “We Are The Many” went viral on YouTube, garnering more than half a million views; Rolling Stone Magazine dubbed it the “Occupy Anthem.” Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana grew up on the shores of Waikiki. He was a protégé of the Hawaiian slack-key guitar legends.

A branch of the illustrious Jazz Mafia, Cosa Nostra Strings, specializes in original Hybrid Crossover music. Ranging from acoustic heavy metal to power ballads and everything in between, they utilize their unique instrumentation of cello, viola, violin, trombone, bass, and percussion to the fullest extent. This five-piece powerhouse crew features conservatory-trained classical musicians who bring a provocative, precise, punk-rock personality to a highly distinguished multi-styly sound. Spanning centuries of genres, you’ll hear diverse influences from around the world: funk infusion, folk, western chamber music, jazz, and most certainly 80’s rock ballads. Cosa’s successful 2017 season included feature performances at SFJAZZ, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, Point Richmond Jazz, UnderCover Presents, The Soiled Dove, and supporting longtime collaborator Lilan Kane.

Silvestre Martinez Latin Jazz Quintet

The percussion player Silvestre Martinez grew up in Mexico,in a large family of musicians who played chilena, merequetengue and charanga music, which is Afro-Mexican music from the coast. He has performed throughout Europe and Asia, and spent time in Cuba exploring the roots of Afro-Cuban music. He moved to the Bay Area in 2002, where he has been performing and recording with masters of Latin jazz.

With over 25 solo, collaboration, and compilation CDs to his name, Kahumoku has hosted the weekly "Slack Key Show" on Maui for a decade and produced four Grammy-winning CDs. He founded the Hawaiian Music Institute at University of Hawai‘i-Maui College. Aweau has released six solo CDs, which have won him multiple Na Hoku Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Jazz Album of the Year. Kahiapo has contributed to more than 84 recording projects and performed with numerous artists both on stage and as a studio musician, and is a regular at slack key festivals.

Barrio Manouche is an acoustic San Francisco-based international septet (Spain, Quebec, France, Brazil and California), frequently joined by artists from around the globe. They have been recognized for their surprise concerts, innovative style, complex technique and their passion for their musical improvisation. The band performs a repertoire of original instrumental compositions with a unique sound deeply influenced by a range of musical traditions, from the swing of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet to the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, the Gypsy soul of eastern Europe and the flamenco of Paco de Lucía, to the avant-garde sounds of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane.

Her band showcases an ensemble of top Brazilian Jazz artists that include legendary Grammy® nominated pianist Marcos Silva, drummer Dillon Vado, bassist Scott Thompson and percussionist Ami Molinelli. Together they synthesize catchy, lyrical melodies with Jazz and Brazilian rhythms. Dreyer has played in the bands of such diverse artists as Billy Taylor, Dom Salvador, Helcio Milito, Portinho, Bossa PDX, Walter Bishop Jr., Mel Lewis, Robert Palmer, Nnenna Freelon and saxophonist/author James McBride.

Tony and Vernon have finally teamed up to make a team that is worth talking about. Together they lift each other up to new heights. They both have played with enough musical royalty, which they felt this and their friendship should turn into a musical collaboration of fun and great music. Vernon, for the past 10 years, has been the musical director for Booker T Jones. Prior to that, he has played with Maze, Mariah Carey and his favorite gig ever was with the musical legend Herbie Hancock. Tony comes from music royalty growing up with his famous Dad, Merl Saunders. Tony had piano lessons from Herbie Hancock when he was very young and Sly Stone gave him an organ at age 10. Not many people may say their first gig was with Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders band at age 17. Tony has played with Dr. John, Les McCann, Chaka Kahn, Stevie Wonder, Steve Cropper, David Crosby, Eric Clapton and George Howard. The last few years he has played with Paul Jackson Jr., Jessie J, Nils and Gail Jhonson. Tony’s last CD “Uptown Jazz”, stayed on the Smooth Jazz charts for 2 years, and he is currently working on a new CD titled “Sexy Somethin”.

Acoustic Alchemy

Since 1987, the British band Acoustic Alchemy has pushed the limits of the acoustic guitar’s potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from smooth jazz, to folk, to rock, to world music. Between 1990 and 2001, three of their albums earned Grammy nominations. Since 2006, the lineup has featured Greg Carmichael, who joined back in 1985, on nylon guitar; Miles Gilderdale (1999) on steel string acoustic & electric guitars, Fred White (2000) on keyboards and the powerhouse rhythm section of Greg Grainger (2003) on drums and his brother Gary Grainger (2006) on bass.
