Citizen Kane

Orson Welles' 1941 film directing/acting debut, a lesson in how total power corrupts totally, still lands at or near the top of all-time best-of movie lists. On his deathbed, tycoon Charles Foster Kane (Welles) whispers his dying word: "Rosebud." A reporter's (William Alland)quest to find out its meaning takes us through the turbulent life of this powerful, egotistical man -- and shows us just what, at the end, he valued most. The legendary cast includes Joseph Cotten, Ruth Warrick, Dorothy Comingore, Everett Sloane, Agnes Moorehead and Ray Collins. Gregg Toland's camera work opened new worlds in cinematography. It received nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Cinematography, but only won one: Best Writing, for Herman J. Mankiewicz and Welles.
